You can find a very good write-up about being LDS and using mantras in your every day life here. Even if you are not LDS, it has good thoughts and ideas as it relates to mantras associated with churches in general.
Here is another write-up that for the most part associates meditation with the occult. While I would agree somewhat with this statement: "New age meditation is merely receiving the love of God without desiring repentance or the guidance of the Holy Spirit," I would suggest that repentance can come in many forms, not just what is written the Church Handbook of Instructions. Repentance, IMHO, is turning to Christ, the True Light. If He is the focus of my mantras, then isn't that the same as making my eye single to His Glory? I'll leave it to you to decide.
